Background of the study
Plastic waste pollution is a growing environmental problem that threatens ecosystems and public health, especially in urban areas. In Abakaliki Local Government Area, the accumulation of plastic waste has disrupted waste management systems and adversely affected community well-being (Uche, 2023). Rapid urbanization, coupled with inadequate waste disposal facilities, has led to the proliferation of plastic debris in residential areas, water bodies, and open spaces. This pollution not only degrades the aesthetic quality of the environment but also poses significant risks to human health and local wildlife (Nwafor, 2024). In response, community-based initiatives have emerged as important mechanisms for managing plastic waste through recycling, public awareness campaigns, and local clean-up efforts. Recent research has emphasized that community engagement is vital for effective waste management and environmental sustainability (Okoro, 2025). This study examines the extent of plastic waste pollution and evaluates the effectiveness of community responses in mitigating its adverse effects. It seeks to highlight best practices and identify gaps in current waste management efforts, thereby contributing to policy formulation and sustainable urban development (Ebele, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Abakaliki is experiencing severe plastic waste pollution due to rapid urbanization and insufficient waste management infrastructure. The resultant environmental degradation poses health risks and affects community aesthetics. Although community initiatives have emerged to tackle this challenge, their impact remains limited by inadequate resources and coordination. The problem calls for a comprehensive evaluation of both the pollution extent and the community responses (Chukwu, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  • To assess the extent of plastic waste pollution in Abakaliki.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of community responses to plastic pollution.
  • To recommend strategies for improving waste management practices.

Research questions

  • What is the level of plastic waste pollution in Abakaliki?
  • How effective are community-based responses in managing plastic waste?
  • What improvements can be made to enhance waste management practices?

Research Hypotheses

  • H1: Plastic waste pollution in Abakaliki is significantly high.
  • H2: Community responses have a positive but limited impact on waste management.
  • H3: Enhanced coordination and resources will improve the effectiveness of plastic waste management.

Significance of the study
This study provides important insights into plastic waste pollution and community management practices, guiding policymakers and local organizations in formulating effective waste management strategies. It contributes to environmental sustainability and public health improvements in urban communities.

Scope and limitations of the study
Limited to the appraisal of plastic waste pollution and community responses in Abakaliki Local Government Area, Ebonyi State.

Definitions of terms

  • Plastic waste pollution: The accumulation of discarded plastic materials in the environment.
  • Community responses: Local initiatives and actions aimed at addressing environmental challenges.
  • Waste management: The collection, transport, processing, and disposal of waste materials.
